RHS Cardiff Flower Show 2013. Schools Wheelbarrow Competition - A Wheely Good Read

One of the most enjoyable exhibits at the Cardiff Flower Show 2013 was the School Wheelbarrow Competition.

On entering the show visitors were greeted with a colourful display of creations from schools in Cardiff, Caerphilly Borough and Vale of Glamorgan.

The competition encouraged school children to create their own unique garden using a wheelbarrow. The theme for this years wheelbarrow competition was 'A Wheely Good Read' which tied in with this years Cardiff Children's Literature Festival (www.cardiffchildrenslitfest.com). Children had used some great books to inspire their design. We noticed displays that included Mr Men, Harry Potter, Alice in Wonderland and many more.

The competition was organised by Ruth Mumford at Cardiff City Council. Ruth Mumford and her team were actively handing out blue tokens to encourage onlookers to vote for their favourite wheelbarrow.

We particularly enjoy exhibits that get the crowd interacting with an exhibit. Allowing people to vote really makes the public feel involved. We saw a great amount of discussion on where to place their magical blue token. We even saw a few small disagreements on where people believed their partners blue token should go.

The schools and children who entered this competition showed a great deal of imagination and a clear understanding of the basic elements required for creating a garden design. Maybe in the future they wil have their own show garden at one of RHS events.
