Quick Guide: summer, half hardy, full sun, height: 23cm-38cm/9-15in, width: 30cm/12in

Only in the very mildest areas can gazanias, natives of South Africa, be grown as perennials; elsewhere they are treated as annuals. The brilliant daisy-like flowers of cream, yellow, orange, crimson or mauve will only open in direct sunlight. The narrow leaves are grey on the underside.

PROPAGATION Sow seeds in very early spring in gentle heat. Prick seedlings into pots when they are large enough to handle. Harden off and plant out in early summer when all danger of frost is past. Tip cuttings may he taken in summer and overwintered in the greenhouse before planting out the following year.

GROWING Gazanias must have full sun; they like well-drained soil, and do well in coastal gardens.

VARIETIES Choose from named hybrids such as `Chansonette', lemon, apricot, orange, carmine red; `Sundance', large blooms, wide range of colours including cream; `Mini Star', compact strain, yellow, gold, bronze, red.

POSSIBLE PROBLEMS Damp conditions cause grey mould.
