Tips on buying flowering bulbs |
The best of spring bulbs include daffodils and tulips. During other seasons you will also see magnificent bloomers such as summertime's lilies and gladiolus.
Tips
- Try and buy bulbs at garden centres or diy stores during the planting season. Remember if you buy early you will get a better choice. Try to purchase bulbs by mail or the Internet ahead of season (buy June and July for autumn planting), many mail order catalogues and online stores offer discounts at this time. Many mail order companieis will now take your order early, and then send the bulbs to you at planting time.
- Purchase and plant spring bulbs icluding crocuses, daffodils, hyacinths and tulips, durinjg the Autumn (September, October and November).
- Purchase and plant summer bulbs including gladiolus, lilies and ornamental onions, during the spring (February, March and April).
- Search the Web for online sources such as crocus and greenfingers. Great deals can be found click here
- Remember that bulbs are graded by their size, with different sizes for top grades of various types of bulbs. To get the best bloomers try to choose topsize bulbs. If you are going to be growing in a large are, you can make substantial savings by purchasing smaller sizes. The best bulbs are firm to the touch and do not have any mold on them.
- Make savings bu purchasing prepackaged bags of bulbs, or spend a litte extra to get individual bulbs in special varieties.
- Try to plant enough so that you get a good display of colour. Group tulips close together but make sure they aren't touching (this promotes rot). Whien spacing other bulbs try and place them about two or three times their size apart.
- Make the blooming season last loger by planting bulbs that flower at different times. Tulips and daffodils, are marked as early, mid or late season.
- Look for spring-blooming bulbs that can be forced in the fall. These include hyacinths and certain narcissus, usually labeled for forcing
