When planning a garden, take a walk around
the neighbourhood and see what grows best in your neighbours'
gardens. Once you have decided on the plants that you will
have, make a plan for the layout of the garden, noting the
paths and features. Remember to strata your plants so that
you have the tall/larger ones at the back and the smallest/shortest
plants at the front.
Carefully assess your own limitations and enthusiasm. Consult
a local nurseryman or a local amateur gardener who knows the
area, understands the conditions, and knows which plants do
well in the area. Make notes and write down your thoughts
and ideas. Assess limitations and features of the site - drainage,
wind direction, mature trees. What water is available and
of what quality is it? How much money can I spend? Identify
the needs of the members of the household. Make a plan for
your garden and how you would like to lay it out.
Make a plan
Have surprise corners, and try not to have a garden that can
be seen all in the one glance. Plant the feature trees as
soon as possible. Install paths and paving according to your
plan. Allow for garden lighting. Create the garden by moving
outwards from the house. Create the entertaining area first.
Don't forget to include places to sit and enjoy your garden.
